Is that inspection still relying on human judgment?

Even as packing houses and food factories automate, some judgments remain beyond conventional image processing. NIRECO combines technologies starting from the inspection problems that remain on the floor.
  1. When colors are similar, defects get missed.

When the defect is the same color as the sound area, conventional image processing struggled to detect it.

    Cracked tomatoes, peeling tofu

  2. The blemish is found. But what kind is it?

Merely detecting damage is of little use for sorting by disease or for advising growers. What is needed is a judgment that classifies the type of damage.

Original image of a mandarin. You can tell there is damage, but not which disease it is.

    Diseases on melons and mandarins

  3. When items touch, the count goes wrong.

With foods of irregular shape and size, overlapping and touching items make it hard to separate outlines. Reflective cans were also a source of miscounts with conventional processing.

Judge quality with more than one pair of eyes.

Multi-angle inspection combining 2D, 3D and AI evaluates quality differences that are hard to judge by eye with high accuracy. By quantifying quality and feeding it back to the production process, we support continuous quality improvement and process optimization. Combined with near-infrared internal quality measurement, it evaluates both appearance and interior.

2D measurement

High-precision measurement backed by decades of image processing and sensing technology.

Quantitatively evaluates color, shape, area and more, as well as adhering foreign matter.

See processed food inspection

3D measurement

Measures height, unevenness, volume, cross-section shape and more that 2D struggles to capture.

A laser line captures height data line by line to generate 3D image data of the object, measuring even slight surface unevenness and defects with high precision. Adding 3D inspection to the color and blemish detection of 2D image inspection captures fine unevenness that is hard to spot by eye.

Captures shape even with soil attached

3D is little affected by lighting conditions, so it measures the volume and shape of soil-covered potatoes even on a black conveyor. An integrated housing and a single control PC also keep the footprint small.

AI judgment

Identifies quality differences that conventional methods could not, with high accuracy.

AI judges appearance defects that image processing alone struggled to identify: same-color defects, complex shapes and defects with large variation from piece to piece.

Image processing for natural objects, plus our own AI

Our long experience lets us condition images so the AI can pick out features easily before inference. We tune the model for each fruit and use XAI heat maps to check where it is looking, feeding that back into retraining.

Internal quality measurement (near-infrared spectroscopy)

Measures internal quality such as sugar content and acidity without cutting.

A near-infrared internal quality sensor converts differences in the absorption of light transmitted through the object into estimated quality values using a calibration curve built in advance. Sugar content and acidity of fruit are measured by the Imes 10 internal quality sensor, and crude fat in fish by the QG100 fish quality inspection system, which applies the same near-infrared analysis. Combined with visual inspection, it evaluates the quality you can see and the quality you cannot on the same line.

Putting numbers on quality you cannot see

Internal disorders are graded by level for sorting against your quality standards. From fruit Brix measurement to fish fat content, we build the calibration curve for your target.

* Values shown are the results of individual trials and installations, not guaranteed values. Accuracy varies with the target, imaging conditions, training data and calibration curve.

MelonsAI image inspection

Find the disease, and identify which one.

Problem
Diseases were hard to tell apart: conventional image processing could detect the damaged area but could not classify the type.
Solution
The AI learned the features of blue streaks, coarse netting, damage and vine dieback, and classifies them along with sound fruit.
Result
Disease and damage are judged by type. The classification results support consistent quality sorting and reduce the labor of grading.

Classes the AI sorts into

  • Sound fruit
  • Blue streaks
  • Coarse netting
  • Damage
  • Vine dieback

Chinese yam3D inspection

Estimate the weight of Chinese yam, bumps and all.

Problem
Irregular shapes made weight estimation from images unreliable.
Solution
3D measurement from four directions analyzes the solid shape. Weight is converted from the height data, and dents are evaluated as well.
Result
Weight is estimated from the solid shape despite the irregular surface. Dent evaluation is also used in grading.

OnionsNear-infrared internal quality inspection

Evaluate rot you cannot see from outside, without cutting.

Problem
Internal disorders invisible from the outside had to be sorted out non-destructively.
Solution
A near-infrared internal sensor grades the internal condition by level based on a calibration curve.
Result
Forty randomly selected onions were classified by internal condition. The results can be used to set quality standards and evaluate sorting.

Product lineup

From the near-infrared internal quality sensor and external quality sensors to the food external quality inspection system and fish sorting systems. We propose the right system for your target and the items you need to inspect. See each product's features and specifications.
Produce sorting systems
Systems that instantly and non-destructively grade agricultural products by external factors (blemishes, rot, size and more) or internal factors (sugar content and acidity).
Fish sorting systems
Systems that instantly measure and identify fish species and fat content. Because sorting needs no manual handling, it is fast and hygienic and free from the subjective judgment of individual graders.
